Here’s a perfect Halloween thriller. Kid Cudi, Cage and Shia Lebouf get together to create this documentary of two serial killers video taping their killing spree. I’m really starting to question Shia Lebouf’s mental state. This is the second weird and strange video he’s directed, the first which was the horrifying and traumatizing was Marilyn Manson’s “Born Villain” video. Now we have “Maniac”, very strange indeed. Blue Sky – Common
I covered this gem from Common “Blue Sky” when the song was released. No we got some visuals to this amazing track. Enjoy. I’m stocked for his new album The Believer November 22nd.
Sweet – Common
Damn! You know how I love Common. I’ve been hyped for The Believer since it’s inception. So here’s a double does of Common. Not only do we have 2 tracks but we have 2 completely different sounding tracks. “Blue Sky” is what we’ve grown to expect from the evolving Sense. “Sweet” brought me back to the 90′s with it’s hardcore hook and beastly lyrics. I’m in love. Yet I’m still not sure what direction the album is going towards, I’m still excited for The Believer.
Like Smoke – Amy Winehouse feat. Nas
“Like Smoke” is some crazy Ms. Cleo look into the future stuff. It’s hard to Imaging but this track was recorded in 2008. This was pre Wall Street and the global financial district occupation. Yet as you listen to Nas lyrics you can’t help imagine that they were inspired by these events. The song itself has a very retro soulful sound that we’ve all come to know and love from Amy.
Green Light – Leisure
I came upon Leisure by accident. But that for me was no accident. More like a coincidence. Either way I’ve been blessed with what some would say is the evolution of music. Where genres, artists and songs meet. The intersection is called evolution. So here you have it, Leisure – slightly new indie rock band. Cross breed between The Cure and U2. Throw in some creativity. the present day indie rock sensibility and an ear for music and voila! You have ” Green Light”. See double vision video after jump.
The Roots are a busy band/hip-hop group. Besides being the main band for Jimmy Fallon they are also about to release their 13th studio album. “Make My” is the first single from Undun which they just released a video for. Undun is going to be interesting as it’s all about the life of Redford Stephens. The concept of the Undun is to tell a story in reverse. Starting narrative will begin at the end of Stephen’s life. The 10 songs on the album will be in reverse. Pretty interesting concept. I’m looking for to hearing it all from beginning to end or should I say end to beginning. The video for “Make My” is definitely making a statement.
Heartbeat – Childish Gambino
I haven’t been following the Childish Gambino craze as of late. Maybe I should. This latest track that most likely to be off his new album November 15th. “Heartbeat” was premiered on Hot 97 while exclaiming “We rocking for the nerds right now!” This song is a banger, with obvious influences from Justice and Drake. It’s a good place to start and Gambino ran with it.
This is the second time I cover King Charles and I’m in love for a second time. There’s something about his voice that keeps me uplifted. He’s a mix of Matisyahu and Bright Eyes – a hard mix to swallow but let your ears do the deciding. King Charles music sorta falls in between many genres. “Ivory Road” is no different yet no less amazing. His pop fused folk and lyrics have a dainty quality to them, mixing the best of old and new.
As we get closer to the release date of undun, I’m starting to get a clearer picture of what The Roots upcoming album is all about. Last week I premiered “Make My“, and this week is no different in visuals. The Roots are telling a story that’s all to familiar. A young man who’s in the middle of big decisions, the light side or the dark side. The Roots manages to make a very strong point here without sounding preachy.
Phlos Finister is living up to the hype. Even though she does what most new artist do at the beggining of their career. Hop on some classic tracks and “redo” them. Her sound is very familiar but o so very smooth. Its got this 90′s SWV flow to it, can’t go wrong with a songs like that. Even though a lot of potential fans will scratch there head, there’s so many people copying, thinking how do you seperate the ok from the great. Phlo figured it out. Drop a new original flow over a banger and you have an EP – “Crown Gold”. Yes this new album is based on the past. And yes she does say herself she wants to be avant garde. Is this the way to break into the R&B scene? It’s a good start.
Hear or download “Crown Gold” – the whole album after the jump.
