Perfect match? Nah, pretty odd. But it works. Alexander Ebert (of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros) has linked up with the RZA for a cut from his solo album. With RZA‘s vast knowledge of music evidenced by his history of obscure samples and strange influences, the dude could pretty much work with any piece of music and make it seem natural. On this one, he spits a calm flow and sounds more like a spiritual guide than a Wu-Tanger.

Gorilla Warfare Tactics, the NYC trio dropped their first song earlier this year. GWT are ready to make moves and build their resume. Here’s the first new track out of a bunch that they’ll be releasing in the next few months. “RewindRhyme” has a lighthearted, piano-driven bounce to it that works perfectly with the group’s true school style.
GWT will be at the P&P show on the 29th in Brooklyn, so if you’re in NYC, come by.

Yeah yeah, new Red Hot Chilli Peppers! Here’s the first single from I’m With You, the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ 10th studio album. The album is produced by mastermind Rick Rubin and this single will soon be accompanied by a video directed by…wait for it… Kreayshawn. Weird, yeah? Yeah. Kreayshawn is no stranger to videos – she attended Berkeley Film School and has directed visuals for Lil B, but RHCP? Should be pretty crazy.

I’m With You drops August 30. Yeees.

How To Dress Well is often given a title that mean little to me called “R&B deconstructionist,” and which probably means very little to those who don’t use strange categories or genres. It makes me think that How To Dress Well is taking R&B songs and stripping them for parts. I doubt that’s how his creative process goes. But when something this different comes along, I guess we all need a way to describe it.

HTDW’s makes music plays out like the soundtrack to a dream. For his latest EP, the use of orchestral elements and soaring vocals feels enormous, but never complicated or jumbled. The above video has some commentary on it and the below track is just the song. Enjoy the deconstructing of R&B.

New Toro Y Moi! My favorite chillwave artist by far. Toro/ Chaz Bundick has been out making the tour rounds in support of his latest release Underneath The Pine, which was gifted to us this past February. Good news is he managed to find some downtime during a brief break last month to record a new give track EP called Freaking Out.
“Saturday Love” is the lead single off said EP. Although this is a nice tune, don’t let the title of it convince you that love is only meant for the weekends, because love is in style everyday of the week.

Unexpected collaboration between two of hip-hop’s most talked about new acts, Kreayshawn and P&P favorite Theophilus London. This song is what you’d expect – weird. The beat is pretty phenomenal, it’s all stuttering bass which gives the effect that the track itself is drunk. Theophilus rocks his verse in a very nonchalant manner, and Kreayshawn does what Kreayshawn does, dropping lines like “My swag will kill you/And my swag will kill him too.” Make what you will of that, but in the past 20 minutes I think I’ve listened to this track 5 or 6 times, so it must be doing something right.

Sick and sicker! Someone must have slipped some acid in my bedtime hot chocolate because that video is seriously weird, up, NSFW and pure Theophilus. Everything this guy does has a little “je ne sais quoi” (I’m off to Paris tomorrow, sorry) that sets it apart from the competition, and makes it hard to categorize or put in a box, but this video is some next level craziness and was animated by Nate Kim, illustrated by Tim Walkiewicz and produced by Ben Solomon.

Theophilus London:

This video was built on the hype and importance of the internet. NYC legends and hotspots, twitter personalities, quotes and everything hyped weather good or bad. I was intrigued by this character my friend Ben Solomon had on his avatar and approached him via twitter and email to talk about a concept. He came over an we sketched out a few things and brainstormed. This is the modern day Waldo. Can u spot anyone? #isityou?

Timez Are Weird These Days is out tomorrow!

First time I heard L.A I thought damn she’s hard but her beats are not memorable. Now she comes stacked with this odd unforgettable hard beat. Now this MC sticks out. She’s been doing all the right stuff in creating a name for herself. I’ve heard some nice tracks from her in the past but none of them stood out to me the way this one does. This is on her upcoming *The L.A. Riots* album which will be out soon via DJ Booth.

Funkmaster Flex just leaked this Watch The Throne track. Unlike the chaotic “H.A.M.,” the Kanye production on this cut has a more simple, soulful feel to it that recalls some of Ye’s earlier work. What do you think? Is Watch The Throne going to live up to the expectations?

The album will be available online on August 1st.
