Add to my long list of regrets: waiting for so long to check out Gilbere Forte. Gilbere is an up and coming emcee who has joined the army of young, hip-hop talent that draws from influences in the indie world. I’ve been hearing his name for a while, but didn’t get into it until recently. For his latest track, he goes in over the Yeasayer remix of Florence and the Machine‘s “Dog Days Are Over”. You can buy his debut album 87 Dreams from iTunes.

Fans of The xx may have heard that Jamie, the beatmaker, has been prepping for a solo release. Fans may be disappointed to hear that his single “Far Nearer” is nothing like The xx. Listen Before You Buy is right in pointing out that “Far Nearer” beckons comparisons to Burial, but it sounds more as if Burial cheered up a little and moved to a tropical island.
It’s a tune I made on one of our short breaks from touring and I was eager to make some new music…I got a steel pan and made this track and it is coming out on Numbers Records in about a month or so.

Coma Cinema, aka South Carolina’s Mat Cothran, is prepping his Blue Suicide release, out soon on Wonder Beard. “Gentlewoman” sounds like a unique combination of Bob Dylan and The Shins. It’s indie rock, but not the kind of “current” indie rock that capitalizes on the latest trends. This one has a timeless feel to it.

This is so cool to me. Unexpected cover songs are the best – it’s like finding out that two of your favorite people know each other and get along.

The Age of Adz, Sufjan Stevens‘ first full length album in five years, takes on a much more electronic tone but beneath all the sparking wires and robotic drum machines are the same types of lush, grandiose compositions that we’ve come to expect from Sufjan. The Age of Adz is out October 12th.
